Art: Papa Please Get the Moon for Me

Arielle (mommy):

Different roles of the members of the family is something we are focusing on in our study of family.  According to Lil her daddy is "doctor daddy" (because he always fixes her "booboos" as well as her toys).  For Lil and O he is the most fun person to play and wrestle with.  He is the one who works all day, pays the bills, takes care of the yard, the cars, anything that needs fixing, is the best artist in the house, and still has time to do nice things for us all the time.  He would probably get the moon for us if we asked, so today in honor of him we read Papa Please Get the Moon for Me (don't worry Jake, we won't really ask for that...not today anyway.)

Once a week a couple of 5 year old girls come over to do art projects with us, so they did this activity as well.  Before we read the book, we talked about all the things dads do.  We read the book (if you don't have it you can watch it on youtube).  After a discussion of the book (which is about a dad who climbs a ladder to get the moon for his daughter) we set out to begin our paintings.

The girls began by coloring a cutout of a man in a ladder climbing position.  Next the girls painted blue and white stripes for the night sky.  After the paint dried, they glued craft sticks on to their paintings to build a ladder, put their "papas" on the ladders, then glued on the moon and added star stickers.

They were all really proud of their finished products.  This was a great age appropriate activity for them and they all felt successful.
