Science: Hard or Soft

Cynthia (nanny):
Today we completed a science activity where we sorted hard and soft familiar objects. I began laying out 2 index cards with the word labels. Then, I asked the girls to predict if each object we found would be hard or soft. They took turns touching the objects and decided which side of the table to lay the object. It was interesting to see them change their minds once they felt the objects in their hands.

Arielle (mommy):
I started the activity with O while Lil was eating.  I let him dig through the box of all the mixed hard and soft objects, then as he took each one out I told him "hard" or "soft" and got him to say the words after me.  After he took all the objects out of the box he enjoyed throwing them back in.

For her turn Lil (after adding one object to the soft side) sorted all of the hard objects first and then did the remaining soft objects.  It's cool to see how the three age groups work differently!

 Guru moment:
Cynthia had the twins sort the objects in graph form.  A great follow up activity would be to make a poster using objects that you can glue or tape (cotton balls, toothpicks, pasta, band aids, sponge, ribbon, fabric scraps, a small rock, etc).  Another fun activity to promote early reading would be to make a hard a soft book using objects or pictures from a magazine.  Pattern books like these (A rock is hard.  A feather is soft.) make pre-readers feel successful because they can easily predict the words on the page.
